Smitty

The best music always seems instantly familiar. Steve Smithie, a New York City guitarist and composer, is a prime example. His music, full of hummable melodies and cinematic soundscapes, tells stories you already seem to know. Yet you've never heard anything like it. Alternately evoking the banks of the Mississippi delta and some mysterious dark alley, Smitty's songs are filled with whimsical melodies, melancholic reminisces, and loose-limbed grooves. It is music without artifice, speaking so directly it is easy to overlook its complexity.

Like A Child was recorded at 'The Pigeon Club', a former Italian social club for men in Hoboken, New Jersey and at Deanna's Restaurant, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Each of Smitty's compositions on this recording is like a miniature world, transporting the listener to a different place and time. With wild harmonics and trance-inducing frequencies emanating from Smitty's guitar, Like A Child reveals an ethereal quality that is undeniable.
Witch Hunt was recorded in an industrial garage in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It features Smitty's electric and acoustic playing in a raw context. Due to the adverse conditions under which it was recorded, there's a provocative and personal quality hard to access in many of today's more modern recording environments. Witch Hunt demonstrates Smitty's ability to fuse Chicago Blues, Jazz and early Rock 'n' Roll to create a new and unique style.
